bio

OCH VEY are Scotland’s premier anarcho-klezmer band. We take the traditional folk music of Eastern European Jews and fuse it with a punchy backline. Our gigs promise a generous dose of high octane, dance inducing, punk infused klezmer music. Expect soaring clarinet solos, wailing fiddle, crunchy guitar, pounding drums, arresting accordion, and a large quantity of bass.

We’ve played protests, parties, and picket lines (but might still stretch to your wedding or bar mitzvah). We’ve gigged in the cold (Rhyze mushroom farm), the sun (Scottish anarcho-folk festival), underground (Bannerman’s) and with the dead (Forest Cafe, RIP).

The music means a lot to us, it’s a way of connecting to our roots and culture, building community, and finding resonance between contemporary jewish life and the revolutionary yiddishland of yore. You might laugh, you might cry, and you’ll definitely dance.

We are:
Ella – violin
Scot – bass
Hamish – percussion/vocals
Jess – accordion/vocals
Benji – guitar/mandolin/vocals
Leila – clarinet
